DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Fiona Brown (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum)\, Ste
fania Del Prete (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum)\n\nWelcome to the train
ing school - Best Practices for Accounting for Biological Sex in (Transcri
 pt)OMICS Studies!\nAugust 24th and 25th at the DKFZ in Heidelberg\, German
y\nThis two day workshop will cover the basics needed to incorporate sex i
nto your data analysis and give you time to work on your own dataset with
guided expertise. If you do not have your own data set\, one will be provi
ded to you. Basic knowledge of R is required.\nDescription\nDoes sex reall
y matter when planning a biomedical research project?Should experiments al
ways include both males and females in each experimental group? How can we
design studies in practice while balancing experimental and ethical const
raints\, controlling costs\, and maintaining sufficient statistical power
to detect other biological effects of interest? And will accounting for se
x make the analysis more complicated for bioinformaticians?\nIn this works
hop\, we will focus on biological sex as a key variable in biomedical rese
arch\, discussing practical considerations for both experimental design an
d data analysis. Together\, we will explore the concept of biological sex\
, examining questions such as whether it can truly be considered a binary
variable and how it differs from gender\, and discuss how its biological
complexity can influence research outcomes.\nThe workshop will combine cas
e studies with guided hands-on exercises using transcriptomics datasets\,
providing participants with practical tools to integrate sex as a biologic
al variable in their analyses.\nKey questions addressed during the worksho
p will include:\n\n\nHow can transcriptomics datasets be analyzed appropri
ately while accounting for sex as a biological variable?\n\n\nHow can pote
ntial sex-related biases in datasets be identified and corrected where pos
sible?\n\n\nHow can we detect genes showing interactions between sex and o
ther factors of interest (e.g.\, treatments or environmental conditions)?\
n\n\nHow can different analytical choices influence the conclusions drawn
from the data?\n\n\n \nWe are looking forward to your registration!\nThe

HERE\nThe Conference will take place in person in the K1/K2 room (upstairs
) in the communication center at the DKFZ.\nIm Neuenheimer Feld 28069120 H
eidelberg Germany\nGerman Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) — Communication
Center Im Neuenheimer Feld 280\, 69120 Heidelberg Phone (reception): +49 6
221 420\nThe Communication Center is inside the DKFZ main building (INF 28
0)\, on the ground floor near the main entrance. Please come to the main e
ntrance and follow the signs to the Communication Center\; the information
desk in the entrance hall can help if you are lost. Note that DKFZ is in
Neuenheimer Feld\, one of the largest scientific campuses in Europe\, so a
llow a few minutes to find the right building among many similar ones —
the house number is displayed at the top of each building\, and ours is 28
0.\nFrom Heidelberg main station to DKFZ \nAll options below start at the
tram/bus stops directly in front of the station.\n\nBy tram (recommended)
Take tram line 21 or 24 towards Handschuhsheim and get off at "Jahnstraß
e". From there it is a 5-minute walk: continue along Jahnstraße past the
barrier into the clinic campus\, then follow Kirschnerstraße for about 10
0 m — the DKFZ main building is the tall building on your right.\nBy bus
Take bus line 20 or 32 in the direction of Neuenheimer Feld and get off a
t "Kirschnerstraße"\, which is the closest stop to the main building (abo
ut a 3-minute walk).\nOn foot (about 15 minutes) Leave the station heading
north and cross the four-lane Kurfürsten-Anlage. Follow Mittermaierstra
ße over the Neckar. Roughly 100 m after the bridge\, turn left into Jahns
traße and follow it to the barrier at the clinic campus entrance. Pass th
e barrier and continue along Kirschnerstraße for about 100 m\; the main e
ntrance is on your right.\n\n \nFrom the city centre (Bismarckplatz)\n\nL
ines 21 and 32 also run from Bismarckplatz — about 5–10 minutes to Jah
nstraße / Kirschnerstraße. If you are staying in the Altstadt\, Bismarck
platz is the natural interchange point.\n\n \nTickets\nLocal transport is
run by rnv (Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr). A single ticket within Heidelberg cost
s roughly €3\, and a day ticket is worth it if you plan to move around.
Buy at the machines at the stop\, or use the rnv/VRN mobile app. Live time
tables: rnv-online.de/fahrtinfo. The Deutschlandticket\, if you already ha
ve one\, is valid on all of these.\nBy car\nDue to the limited number of p
arking spaces in Neuenheimer Feld\, we recommend using public transportati
on. If you are able to park on Neuenheimer Feld (see circled lots below)\,
your ticket can be validated at the front desk of the DKFZ. If you are un
able to find parking in our lots\, the public parking garage P25 is about
a 10-minute walk from the DKFZ. Click here for more information.\n\n\nTRAV
EL AND ACCOMMODATIONS\nParticipants are expected to cover their travel\, h
otel\, and food costs. The workshop covers coffee breaks and lunches for A
ugust 24th and 25th.Supported participation is available for a select numb
er of participants up to 850 Euro total. To apply please\, use the applica
tion tab on the left hand bar. \nPlease note that only participants who m
eet the eligibility criteria\, in terms of the level of knowledge required
to actively participate in the workshop as defined by the organizing comm
ittee\, will be eligible for reimbursement. If you are already an EU-SABV
member\, you are required to register according to the registration crite
ria. If you are not a member\, you may register with the e-COST portal h
ere or after recieving notification of your selection. Formal invitations
and reimbursement will be coordinated through the e-COST portal.\n \n\nAC
CESSIBILITY\nWe are committed to making this event as accessible and inclu
sive as possible. Please let us know if you have any access needs or requi
re any accommodations in order to participate fully.\n \nThe venue offers
step-free access\, and additional accessibility information can be provid
ed upon request. If you need support regarding seating\, breaks\, particip
ation in the hands-on coding sessions\, or access to materials\, please fe
el free to contact us.\n \nA private lactation room for chestfeeding pa
rents can be made available. Information on local childcare options can al
so be provided upon request.\n \n\nORGANIZER\n \n\nThis event is subject
to the DKFZ data protection policy \nIN COOPERATION WITH  \nThe traini
ng school is co-organized by the EU-SABV COST Action (CA24168)\, the Europ
ean Initiative to Enhance the Current SABV Policy in Preclinical Biomedica
l Research\, funded by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology
(COST). Learn more about the EU-SABV COST Action on the action webpage.\n
