WELCOME to the 11th  International Symposium on Stem Cells and Cancer

We are very happy to again organize and invite you to our traditional “International Heidelberg Symposium on Stem Cells and Cancer” in 2023. It will be the 11th edition again happening at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg September 10-12, 2023 (Sunday afternoon to Tuesday evening). The stem cell symposia have a long tradition as conference series since 2006, the focus of the biennial Behr Conferences has been on “Stem Cells and Cancer”, an ever exciting topic which underwent tremendous progress since then.

The conference is co-organized between three Heidelberg institutions: The German Cancer Research Center, which generously provides also the perfect setting of its communication center, the Heidelberg Institute for Stem Cell Technology and Experimental Medicine (HI-STEM), and the Heidelberg University Hospital. The addition of the Heidelberg University Hospital as co-organizer emphasizes the importance of bridging the gap between fundamental and clinical research as a pivotal prerequisite for state-of the art cancer research. Along these lines, we have organized for the second time a Clinical Workshop on Innovative Strategies to Target AML. This workshop shall premier on Sunday and will showcase the latest progress in mechanism based treatment and clinical research of targeted therapies for this devastating disease.

Besides the multitude of oral presentations during the conference, the social interactions are another important platform to discuss the newest data presented and develop novel hypotheses with other colleagues and peers. Accordingly, we are happy to invite you to participate in the welcome reception on Sunday evening as well as the two poster sessions.

We expect again more than 300 biomedical scientists and clinicians with strong interest in the latest developments in basic and translational research in the wide arena of cancer and stem cells. In 2023, we will cover aspects including tumour heterogeneity, leukemic/cancer stem cells and therapy resistance as well as tumour metabolism, microenvironment, CTCs and metastasis. Approaches include multi-parameter single cell technologies, lineage tracing, epigenome/epitranscriptomics and imaging approaches.
