DZG Science & Career Day 2023  – Translational Health Research

12.06.2023, 12:30 pm  - 13.06.2023, 01:00 pm at Urania Berlin

The six German Centers for Health Research (DZG) joinly organize events for young scientists. We aim to provide training and networking opportunities to facilitate scientific exchange across the DZG research areas.

The DZG Science & Career Day 2023 focuses on Translational Health Research. Successful translational research needs interdisciplinary thinking and well-connected scientists dedicated to the development of new therapies and preventative measures. Knowledge gain is driven by advances in both basic and medical research. The first day of this event brings together experts and early career scientists from both basic and clinical research to present latest research findings and to discuss Bench to Bedside challenges. Whereas the second day focuses on career perspectives and workshops to promote early career scientists.

Workshops

Graphical Abstracts

A good graphical abstract will aid the reception of a complex article and can influence how often it is read and actually understood. It creates a separate visual channel to the written word and can thereby increase the target group of potential readers. In this workshop the participants will learn basic principles on how to plan, sketch, revise and finalize graphical abstracts. All necessary knowledge form the area of graphic design and perception psychology will be conveyed to  address the following questions:

  • How do I choose my content?
  • Which visual language fits my topic?
  • How do I apply storytelling?
  • Where to find the matching visuals?
  • How do I cite external graphic files correctly?
  • Which copyright does apply to my own designs?
  • How to choose the matching colors?
  • How do I make it “look good”?

Hands on examples will teach us how to keep track of changes on former designs and their final published versions. This aims to get everyone into the designers point of view. All participant are encouraged to bring a tablet computer or laptop to the workshop, as there will be time to start a visual library of one’s own, while the art of building databases is introduced. In addition, participants can hand in one of their poster designs or visual sketch with the respective written abstract two weeks prior to the workshop. Feedback and ideas will be provided for further improvement as needed (color scheme, storytelling, selection of visuals). Data will be handled confidentially. Please send the files to mail@scivisto.com.

Networking Skills

Networking is key to success - in science and for science management. Even if it seems challenging: you will learn which principles work, how networking is fun, how you can authentically align it with your own personality type and also motivate the people around you to network more.

Self-presentation in Science

A strong appearance increases your effectiveness, helps you to expand your network successfully and makes it easier to present your research. You will receive guidance in recognising individual external and internal performance factors and in developing strategies for a stress-free appearance. You’ll try out practical voice, breath & body exercises. You‘ll reflect on your mindset and challenges and you‘ll present yourself in a small group with an elevator pitch.

Research Profile & Visibility

This workshop is designed for PhD students, PostDocs and young professionals. You will find out about how to sharpen your research profile and how to align it with your scientific career aspirations. Practical guidance will be given on how to be more visible inside and outside your organization. Activities include time for self-reflection and group discussion. Topics to be addressed:

  • What are the professional skills, that you want to be known for?
  • What kind of everyday work is most in line with your personality traits?
  • Visibility, self-presentation and self-marketing: what is the right balance between authenticity and sharing personal information? What could be the benefits?
  • Future collaboration, research positions or job applications: how can you describe your experience and skill set for other people?
  • Professional use of social and business networks: how to create and maintain meaningful connections to other scientists?
  • Time for questions and discussions
