After our successful tree planting last month, we would like to invite you all to another opportunity to contribute through an "Invasive Plant Clearing Drive" on the 16th of March, 9.30 am onwards - Organised by the Friends of the Earth Group along with the City of Heidelberg Forestry Department.
About the clearing: We will be clearing out rhizomes of Phytolacca americana, an invasive plant species. This work is necessary prior to reforestation, since this is a very fast-growing plant that would overgrow any new seedlings. In addition, their rhizomes are secreting organic phenolic compounds in the soil that inhibit seed germination of other plants (see: Plants (Basel). 2022 Nov; 11(22): 3053).https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9693380/
Where: Meeting point is at the Philosophengärtchen (at 9.30am) [map], from this meeting point, we plan to walk up to a crossroad of forest tracks called Zollstock to meet the people from the forestry department at around 10 am. The clear-cut area is located 5-10min of walk from there.
What you would need to bring: Suitable, “off-road” boots, gloves and clothing that can get dirty.
What they will provide: Tools, food and drinks.

Nach unserer erfolgreichen Baumpflanzaktion im letzten Monat möchten wir Ihnen zu einer weiteren Gelegenheit einladen, durch eine "Aktion zur Beseitigung invasiver Pflanzen" am 16. März, ab 9.30 Uhr, beizutragen - Organisiert von der Friends of the Earth Gruppe zusammen mit dem Forstamt der Stadt Heidelberg.
Über die Beseitigung: Wir werden Rhizome von Phytolacca americana, einer invasiven Pflanzenart, entfernen. Diese Arbeit ist vor der Aufforstung notwendig, da es sich um eine sehr schnell wachsende Pflanze handelt, die jegliche neuen Setzlinge überwuchern würde. Wo: Treffpunkt ist das Philosophengärtchen (um 9.30 Uhr) [Karte]. Von diesem Treffpunkt aus planen wir, zum Kreuzungspunkt der Forstwege namens Zollstock zu gehen, um dort gegen 10 Uhr die Mitarbeitende des Forstamts zu treffen. Das zu rodende Gebiet befindet sich 5-10 Gehminuten von dort entfernt.
Was Sie mitbringen müssen: Geeignetes Schuhwerk, Handschuhe und Kleidung, die schmutzig werden darf.
Was sie zur Verfügung stellen: Werkzeug, Essen und Getränke, Pflanzen.
